John was the son of John Campbell and Catherine Shields (nee Murray). He married Harriet Lambeth in 1910 in Queensland. Little else is known about his life other than his actions at Mount Morgan Mine, Queensland on 4th November 1908. He died in 1961 in Queensland aged 75.

 

EM CITATION:

At  the  Mount  Morgan   Mine,  Queensland, on the  4th  November,  1908,  a  subsidence  occurred of  a  mass  of  ore  weighing  about  12,000  tons. Five men at  work  in the excavations  were  killed: two,  Lyons  and  Banks,  escaped,  the  latter  being seriously injured  in  the  head.    Lyons  called  up the  shaft  for  help.  John   Shields volunteered  to descend,  running very  great risks  while  he  was being  lowered  in  consequence  of  falling  debris. He  reached  the  two  men, and  with   the  help of Lyons, who was unwilling  to leave  his  wounded companion,  Banks  was  securely  fastened  to  the rope,  an.cl eventually  all  tliree  were  drawn  up,
