James was born in Surrey in August 1982. He studied Modern History at St Anne’s College, Oxford, where was a keen sportsman. He captained the University’s boxing team, and his potential for an Army career was spotted by the Royal Marines. He was sponsored by the Regiment throughout university.
Over a 10 year military career, James was an Officer in the elite British Royal Marines. He deployed on multiple tours around the world, including three combat tours of Afghanistan. In 2012, he was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC). He also served in the Special Boat Service (SBS). In March 2013, the then Captain Glancy was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC) “in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Afghanistan during the period 1 April 2012 to 30 September 2012”. The CGC is a second level UK honour, with only the Victoria Cross ranking higher for combat gallantry.
On leaving the military in 2013, James turned to filmmaking. He presented the environmental show Planet SOS on the Mail Plus and hosts documentaries on National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, including Shark Week. His debut feature documentary as a Director “Afghanistan,” premiered at Docs Ireland in Belfast and won Best Documentary at Chichester Film Festival 2023.
He is now a Director of a conservation charity, Veterans 4 Wildlife, where he focuses on the preservation of African wildlife and combating the global trade in shark fins. James is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. James has been recognised for his cinematography and is a Sony Professional Ambassador and Scubapro Deep Elite Ambassador.
Glancy stood as a candidate in the 2019 European Parliament election for the Brexit Party. He was placed at number two on his party’s list and was elected as one of its three MEPs in the South West England constituency alongside Ann Widdecombe and Christina Jordan.
