Andrew Scott (1840-1882) was born on 22nd August 1840 in Devon. He joined the Army at the age of 20 on 4th March 1860, becoming part of the Bengal Staff Corps. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1862 and Captain in 1872. Following joining the Bengal Staff Corps and served in Baluchistan, and would be awarded the VC (London Gazette, 16th January 1878). The award of Scott’s VC was not awarded for action in the face of the enemy, as the attack was made by coolies employed by the Regiment.
Victoria Cross
On 26th July 1877 at Quetta (now in Pakistan), Captain Scott was on duty on the regimental parade ground during the evening, when he heard that some British officers were under attack and being killed. He immediately rushed to the scene. He found a Lieutenant Hewson had been cut down and another called Lieutenant Kunhardt was under attack and wounded. He was being protected by a sepoy. Captain Scott immediately bayoneted two of the assailants and closed in on a third man, who fell to the ground, and was killed by a sepoy of the regiment. Scott’s actions saved the life of the wounded lieutenant.
Scott was presented with his VC on 15th April 1878 in India. Scott was later promoted to Major in the 4th Sikh Infantry. Scott was killed in action at Srinagar, Kashmir on 5th September 1882, aged 42, and was buried in Kashmir Cemetery. The location of his medals is not known.
