Islam-un-Din (1926-1945) was born in India, possibly in 1925 or 1926. Sadly very little is known about his life. It is known that he was the son of Muhammad Abbas and Majidan. Just prior to enlisting in the Indian Army, he married Begum Akhtari. He enlisted with the 9th Jat Regiment of the Indian Army and rose to the rank of Lance Naik.
George Cross
On 12th April 1945 in Pyawbwe, Central Burma, when a stray live grenade threatened to cause widespread casualties. Unhesitatingly, Islam ud Din threw himself onto the grenade: he was killed, aged 19/20, but he saved the lives of all of his companions. As with his beliefs, he was cremated and he is commemorated on the Rangoon Memorial, Burma.
He was recommended for, and awarded a posthumous GC on 5th October 1945. The medal was presented to his mother on 19th December 1945 by His Excellency Field Marshal The Viscount Wavell, Viceroy of India and Governor-General at the Red Fort in Delhi. His medals including the GC, 1939-45 Star, Burma Star and Defence Medal 1939-45 are privately held.
