Awarded the New Zealand Cross for saving the life of a fellow trooper on 28 December 1868. He rode to take an enemy horse that was tethered nearby, and under constant fire from the Taurangaika Pa that was only 40m away he led the horse to his fallen comrade, helped him to mount then led him to safety. In later life he worked as a farmer, insurance salesman, and land agent, and also served on the Wellington City Council for 3 years.
