Christopher L Maling NZC

Awarded the New Zealand Cross for bravery in the NZ Wars of the 1860s. Born in Nelson shortly after his father was killed in the Wairau Massacre, he was taken to live in Auckland. He served with distinction as a scout in the NZ Wars and was promoted to captain in the militia. In later life he served in the Lands and Survey Department, then acted in an official capacity in Japan. He lived the last years of his life in England and was granted a military funeral on his death. His NZ Cross is held at Windsor Castle.
