Awarded the New Zealand Cross for bravery in several instances in 1866. Earlier in the year he rescued Sergeant Major Duff, who was mortally wounded, then later that year he held off an enemy party who had killed his comrade. In so doing he saved the enemy from collecting the guns, taking the money his comrade had in his pocket, and despoiling his body.
