George Augustus Preece NZC

b. 1845 ?  d. 11/07/1925 Palmerston North, New Zealand.

George A Preece NZC

Awarded the New Zealand Cross in the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s. As a child he moved around the country often as his father was a missionary who served in different rural settlements. He thus learnt to speak Maori and developed bush skills. When war broke out he served as an interpreter but then proved his soldiering ability and was promoted to Captain. He received his NZC for his bravery and determination in the attack on Ngatapa Pa. He later served as the Resident Magistrate in different cities in New Zealand then ended his career as a land agent in Palmerston North.
