Richard Shepherd NZC

Awarded the New Zealand Cross in the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s. He had two near-death experiences which helped him to earn his medal. At Otauto in March 1869 he led a group of volunteers who held up an enemy party. Half the group were killed and the other half injured, including him with a bullet through the neck, but they achieved their objective. Then at Ngatapa Pa he lay helpless on the ground as he saved a comrade from falling down a cliff, with an enemy soldier standing close to him with his gun raised. Fortunately another comrade shot his attacker before he could shoot.
