Ian Badenoch was born in c.1898 in Banff, Scotland, the son of John Alexander Badenoch. On the outbreak of the war, Ian enlisted with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, reaching the rank of Corporal. On 26th February 1917, just a month before his death, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers. Following his death from wounds, his AM was presented to his father by King George V at Buckingham Palace on 16th March 1918.
AM CITATION:
On the 19th March 1917, during bombing practice, a live bomb thrown by one of the party failed to clear the parapet and fell back into the bombing pit. Lieutenant Badenoch at once rushed to pick up the bomb and throw it out of the pit. He collided with the man who had thrown it, but persisted in his attempt, and was in the act of throwing the bomb when it exploded, and he was mortally wounded. Lieutenant Badenoch’s prompt and courageous action undoubtedly saved the man who threw the bomb from death or severe injury.
