Very little is known about the life of John Barber RN, other than the events which led to the award of the Albert Medal 2nd Class.
AM CITATION:
The following is an account of the services in respect of which -the Decoratioa has been conferred : — Her Majesty’s ship “Lily” was wrecked off Amour Point, Forteau Bay, Coast of Labrador, on the 16th September, 1889, and seven of her crew were drowned. After her boats had capsized, and although it was known that two of the crew had been drowned near the same spot in attempting to effect communication with the shore, JOHN BARBER, A.B., volunteered to swim with a line through the surf, which he successfully accomplished, enabling a 4-inch hawser to be hauled ashore, whereby communication was established and the rest of the crew saved. The service was one of great risk and gallantry, the bottom being rocky, and there being at the time a dense fog with an ebb tide and considerable swell.
