George was born in Salperton, Gloucestershire in 1890, one of four children of Adam and Ann Broadhurst. His siblings were Charlotte, Edwin and Ada Annie. Following basic schooling he became a farm labourer, and moved to Ampney St Mary, near Cirencester. It was there that he met and married Mary Ruth Rainbow, and they had a daughter, Minnie May. He was a packer in the Permanent Way Department of the Great Western Railway at Portskewett (Monmouthshire) on enlistment. He enlisted with the South Wales Borderers at the outbreak of WWI, and went to France on 3rd December 1915. He was discharged following the wounds to his feet following his AM action, less than two months after his arrival in France.

AM CITATION:

On the 10th February, 1916, a member of a class which was being instructed in bombing dropped a live bomb, picked it up again and threw it to a corner of the room. Broadhurst immediately placed his foot on the bomb with a view to minimising the effect of the explosion. He was severely wounded in both feet. By his brave action he undoubtedly safeguarded his comrades.
