Arthur L Corscadden AM
Arthur was the son of Harold Arthur Stephenson and Emilie Christina Corscadden (nee Massena). He was a graduate of Jarvis Collegiate Institute, Toronto, and became a chartered accountant. He gained employment at a brokerage firm in Toronto. In May 1952, he married Audrey May Monkley, but sadly, their marriage would be shortlived. Arthur had joined the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets on 15th June 1949, and was a Sub Lieutenant at the time of his death.
AM CITATION:
On 6th June, 1954, Sub-Lieutenant Corscadden took nine Sea Cadets of the training establishment Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps ARK ROYAL in a whaler on a training exercise on Lake Ontario. During the exercise a sudden gust of wind struck the sail of the whaler and capsized it. SubLieutenant Corscadden ordered the cadets to stay by the boat but one of them drifted away. The boy could not swim in the cold water and SubLieutenant Corscadden at once swam after him. He put a life jacket on the cadet and lashed him to himself in an effort to keep him afloat, but the water was so cold that they both sank before help arrived. The gallant action of this junior officer is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Royal Canadian Navy.
