William Dodd AM

William was born in Bickerton, near Malpas, Cheshire, the son of George Taylor and Martha Dodd, who were not married at the time of his birth. They married after his birth and had two further sons. In 1873, William married Anne Johnson and they had two children. Tragically, both children and Anne died within 2 years of each other between 1876-1877. William became the Under Manager at Diglake Pit, Staffordshire, and the incident in January 1895 left him mentally and physically scarred that he couldnt return to work after the incident. He had remarried to Elizabeth Emberton in 1882, and they lived in retirement at Diglake House, Audley, Staffordshire until his death in 1907. They are both buried in Audley Churchyard.

 

AM CITATION:

THE’ Queen has been graciously pleased toconfer “The Albert Medal” of the First Class upon Mr. William Dodd, Under Manager of the Diglake Pit, for great heroism in saving many lives at the flooding of the Audley Colliery, Staffordshire, on January 14th last.
