George E Goodwin AM
George was the son of Everett and Florence Elizabeth Goodwin (nee Robson). Goodwin was born in Winnipeg and received his education at Assiniboine School, St. James. His father died young, and his mother re-married to William McCartney. George then lived with his grandfather George Robson. On 6th November 1940 he married Mildred Charlotte Stinson and they had two daughters Donna Rae in 1941, and Merle, born after his death. He had enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve on 11th March 1942.
AM CITATION:
The KING has been pleased to approve a recommendation from His Excellency the Governor General of Canada, that the Albert Medal be awarded posthumously to George Everett Goodwin, Stoker Second Class, R.C.N.V.R., for supreme gallantry in rescuing occupants of the Knights of Columbus Hostel, St. John’s, Newfoundland, on the occasion of its destruction by fire on the 12th December, 1942. Notwithstanding the ifact that he could have saved his own life, and that he himself was very badly burned, this rating assisted in removing two girls from the building, thereby saving their lives. He was then overcome by flames and lost his life.
