Henry Grier AM

b. 29/08/1854 Longford, Ireland.  d. 29/04/1930 Guildford, Surrey.

Henry was born in Ireland, and was educated at Queen’s College, Cork and Carrmichael School, Dublin, before completing his surgical studies in Glasgow in 1875. He joined the Army as a surgeon on 3rd February 1878, and was posted to Malta later that year. Shortly after the award of the Albert Medal, he was posted to South Africa. He was promoted to Surgeon Lieutenant Colonel in 1898 and served in the Boer War, being Mentioned in Despatches. He retired from the Army on half pay due to ill health in 1903.

 

AM CITATION:

On the 26th of- August, 1880, Lieutenant Graham, 10th Regiment, was dying of diphtheria, when SURGEON GRIER performed upon him the operation of a tracheotomy : and, observing that no attempt at inspiration- followed, applied his: lips without a moment’s hesitation to the wound, and, by suction, at the imminent risk of his own life, restored to the patient the power of breathing. Lieutenant Graham’s life was thus saved for the time, although, unfortunately, on the following day the disease extended to his lungs, and he died.
