Frederick G W Jaggers AM
Frederick was born in Brompton, London on 29th September 1853. He was baptised on 5th February 1854 at Holy Trinity in Brompton, and the family lived at 16, Chapple Road. Frederick joined the Navy at the age of 22, and was sailed aboard HMS Excellent. On the same day, he married Elizabeth Black at the Parish Church on Portsea Island, Hampshire. They had a daughter. Following his career in the Navy, Frederick moved to the North East, and in 1891, became a Commissioned Boatman in the Coast Guard. His wife Elizabeth died in 1896 in Tynemouth, and Frederick quickly re-married, on 23rd June 1897 to Margaret Kennedy. After a spell living in Cowpen, they returned to Tynemouth, where he died in 1908.
AM CITATION:
The Norwegian schooner “Atlantic” was wrecked off the South Pier, at South Shields, on the 14th October, 1881, communication with the stranded vessel was speedily effected by means of the rocket apparatus, but as one of the crew was being hauled ashore, the whip—which is an endless line used for hauling to and from a stranded vessel fouled the rocks. FREDERICK JAGGERS, Coast Guard Boatman, at the risk of his life, went into the surf with the view of clearing the line, but was washed off his feet by a heavy sea, and thrown :against the rocks which his head struck with such force as to render him insensible. He was then hauled out of the sea.
