Henry was born in Leicester, the fourth of eight children of William and Elizabeth Kesting Kemp (nee Owen). The family lived in Granby Street. He brought a case for slander to the Birmingham Assizes, and he won, being awarded £500 damages, but the Chief Constable refused to re-instate him.
