Sir Thomas H Mottram

Thomas was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Mottram (nee Moore). Started as articled pupil (afterwards assistant) to the late Mr. Samuel Spruce, F.G.S., and to Mr. Henry. J. Martin, M.Inst.C.E. For six and a half years he was manager of collieries in North Staffs and Bristol coalfields. Appointed H.M. Assistant Inspector of Mines in April, 1889 ; Inspector in charge of West of Scotland District, November 1909, Liverpool and North Wales District June, 1910, and York and North Midland Division, July, 1912, successively. H.M. Chief Inspector of Mines, December, 1920. Member of (I) Deep and Hot Mines Research Committee, January, 1920 ; (II) Oxygen Research Committee, March, 1921 ; (III) Executive Committee of the British Industrial “Safety First” Association, May, 1921 ; (IV) Safety in Mines Research Board, July, 1921 ; (V) the Board for Mining Examinations, October, 1921, etc., etc., The following honorary positions have been held :— Vice-President of the Mining Engineers and of the Mining institute of Scotland ; and President of the Western Branch of the Scottish Federated Institute of Mining Students. Awarded Albert Medal for gallantry at the Baddesley Colliery disaster, February 1883. C.B.E. for special war services, January, 1918.
He married Mary Ann Lowe, and they had five children – Edith, Charles, Sydney, Frederick and Thomas. He was knighted in 1924. He died in 1937 in Doncaster and was buried in St Wilfrid’s Churchyard.
