George Walter Newbery AM

b. 05/10/1919 Romford, Essex.  d. 17/03/1942 Mediterranean Sea.

George was born in Romford, Essex, the son of Henry Walter and Daisy Annie Newbery (nee Wilson). His citation is extremely brief and lacking in detail on his actions aboard MV Crista, a merchant ship which was torpedoed by U-83 in the Mediterranean on the Libyan-Egyptian border. The medal was presented to his mother by King George V at Buckingham Palace on 20th October 1942.

For gallantry in attempting to save life at sea.
