Sydney Owen AM
Sydney was the second of six children of Charles and Martha Owen (nee Barber). Little is known about his early life but he did emigrate to Australia in 1902. He married Audrey Florence Fairfax, and they had two children, Sybil and Barry. Sydney served in World War II from 1939-1948. Sydney’s wife died in 1961, and he passed away six years later and was cremated at Woronara Cemetery and Crematorium.
AM CITATION:
On the morning of the 23rd January, 1940, Maxwell Arthur Farrin, a boy of 15 years of age was bathing at Brighton-le-Sands, Botany Bay, New South Wales, about fifty yards from the shore, when he was attacked by a shark which severed his left leg and inflicted serious abdominal injuries. His plight was observed from the shore and Sydney Owen, although warned of the presence of the shark, which was still close to Farrin, unhesitatingly swam out to the boy and brought him back to the shore. Farrin, however, succumbed to the injuries he had sustained
