Little is known about the life of Corporal (later Acting Sergeant) George Thomas Rowlands of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, other than the actions which led to his award. He was presented with his medal by King George V at Buckingham Palace on 22nd May 1919.
AM CITATION:
At Clonmany, County Donegal, on the 21st October, 1918, Corporal Rowlands was instructing a party in the firing of live rifle grenades when a grenade, the fuze of which had been started, fell into the firing bay. Rowlands shouted to the party to take cover, and ran out of the trench, but the man from whose rifle the grenade had fallen did not move, and Rowlands thereupon returned to the trench, picked up the grenade, and threw it over the parapet, when it immediately exploded. He undoubtedly saved the man’s life at the risk of his own.
