Spencer was one of five children of Charles Spencer and Anna Maria Scrase-Dickins (nee Aldridge). Spencer enlisted in the Highland Light Infantry and served in Egypt (1882), North West Frontier (1897-1898) and World War I, rising to the rank of Brigadier General. He was mentioned in despatches in WWI, and also was awarded the Stanhope Gold Medal for his rescue.
AM CITATION:
While the S S. ” Peshawur ” was passing through the Red Sea on the 27th April, 1893, a Lascar, who was at work in one of the boats fell overboard. Captain SCRASE-DICKINS, who had been invalided home, and was lying half asleep in a chair on deck, immediately jumped overboard and swimming to the Lascar, succeeded in keeping him afloat until thcv were both picked up by’the ship’s boat a mile and a half away from the vessel. The.”Peshawar ” was going at the time at the rate of 11 knots with a strong head wind, and the sea was moderately high, and known to be infested with sharks.
