James Edward Spring AM

b. ? 1858 Hull, Yorkshire.  d. ? 1918 Hull, Yorkshire.

James Edward was born in 1858 in Hull, Yorkshire, the second of two children born to James and Mary Spring (nee Hilbert). James’ father was a head fisherman in the North Sea, and tragically was drowned at sea in a storm in January 1871. James then enlisted in the East Yorkshire Regiment possibly avoid following in his father’s footsteps and working on the sea. Not long after his heroic action which led to the award of the Albert Medal, he left the Army, and became a dock labourer in Hull. James never married and died in Hull aged 61 in 1918. 

 

AM CITATION:

THE Queen has been ‘graciously pleased to confer the “Albert Medal of the Second Class” upon Mr. James Spring, a Private in the 1st Volunteer Battalion, the East Yorkshire Regiment, in recognition of the conspicuous gallantly displayed by him in saving the life of James Sharp, in St. Andrew’s Dock, at Hull,, on the 10th December, 1887.
