Edward C Thompson AM
Edward was born in Omagh, the son of Henry Thompson, a doctor, and Anne Henrietta Blake. He was educated at the Raphoe Royal School and Dublin University, graduating MB in 1871 and serving for a short time in the Royal Navy. He then served as Surgeon-Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps Reserve and the North Irish Horse. He married Diana Ellis, daughter and sister of Major and Captain Ellis who he served with. They had two children, Edith Louisa and Frank. Diana died in 1887, and Edward married secondly to Dorothea (Dodo) McClintock, daughter of his friend and fellow Fusilier, George Perry McClintock, and they had two daughters.
Edward became a FRCSI (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland) in 1885 and was appointed Surgeon at the County Tyrone Infirmary, a position he would hold for over 50 years. He represented County Monaghan in the House of Commons from 1899 to 1906. During WWI, he was Commandant of the Belgian Field Hospital in Flanders from 1915-1916. He was Deputy Lieutenant of County Tyrone in 1929. He died in East Sheen, Surrey in January 1933 and was buried in Omagh.
AM CITATION:
THE Queen has been graciously pleased to confer the ” Albert Medal of the Second Class” upon Edward Charles Thompson, Esq., M.B. University Dublin, L.R.C.S.I., and Surgeon of the Tyrone County Infirmary, for conspicuous heroism displayed in endeavouring, on the 4th April, 1885, to save the life of a child, named Herbert Mitchell, suffering from diphtheria.
