Frederick was born in April 1863, the third of four children born to William and Clara Timme (nee Dixon). His father was thirteen years older than his mother, had been married before and had four children from that marriage. Following schooling, Frederick became a commercial clerk. He emigrated to Australia where he served in the Australian Merchant Navy, before joining his cousin’s tea plantation in Darjeeling, India. He saved several lives during the tropical cyclone that hit the area on the night of 24th September 1899. He was presented with his Albert Medal by the Lt-Governor of Bengal on 6th May 1901.

THE Queen has been graciously pleased to confer the ” Albert Medal of the Second Class ” upon Mr, Frederick Miller Timme, in recognition of his gallantry in saving life during a cyclone at Darjeeling, Northern India, on the night of the 24th September, 1899.
