John Henry Wood AM

b. 27/07/1861 South Shields, County Durham.  d. 11/05/1937 Gateshead, County Durham.

John was the youngest of two sons born to Philip and Hannah Wood, and the family lived at 10 Challoner Grove in South Shields. John became a gas fitter’s apprentice and volunteered with the South Shields Life Brigade. He married Alice Mary Gordon in Gateshead in 1882. He was presented with his Albert Medal by the Inspecting Commander of Coast Guards at Sunderland Life Boat House in June 1886.

 

AM CITATION:

HER Majesty the Queen has been graciously pleased to confer the decoration of the ” Albert Medal of the Second Class” upon MR. JOHN HENRY Wood, a Member of the South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade, for his gallantry, at the imminent risk of his own life, in rescuing a boy washed off the pier at South Shields during a gale on the 24th October, 1885.
