Little is known about Behari Dome, a shunting porter on the East Indian Railway, other than the incident which led to the award of his Edward Medal.
EM CITATION:
On April 6th, 1923, a train with two engines in front was proceeding slowly on the Nayadih branch line of the East Indian Railway Company towards some coal sidings when a little child was observed sitting in the centre of the line. It was impossible for the driver to stop the train in time, but Behari Dome, a shunting porter who was travelling on the leading engine, jumped off, ran ahead of the train and picked up the child from the centre of the track. He stumbled in doing so, but fortunately fell just clear of the track, though the child’s fingers clutched the rails in the fall and were crushed by the approaching train. It stands out clearly that Behari Dome’s action was a very brave one and he undoubtedly risked his life to save the child.
