Little is known about the life of miner Harry Bennetts other than the rescue he undertook in the Randfontein Gold Mine.

 

EM CITATION:

On the 31st December, 1909, an explosion occurred in the Randfontein South Gold Mine at Krugersdorp. through the firing of a packet of gelatine, which gave rise to a suffusion of deadly gas. Four miners who were at work were killed by asphyxia due to the gas. Bennetts, with great courage and at imminent risk of his life, descended two winzes alone to the rescue of natives who had been overcome by the poisonous fumes of the gelatine. One of the winzes was one hundred and twenty feet deep, the other seventy-five feet.
