Very little is known about the life of Henry “Harry” Benton, a miner at Cadeby Colliery, other than his Edward Medal action and that he was personally presented with his medal by King Edward VII on 22nd July 1909.
EM CITATION:
On the 27th October 1908, three men named John Churms, John Green, and Henry Benton, were at’work in the Cadeby Main Colliery, when a very heavy fall of roof took place. Churms was buried, and Green partly so. Benton, who was at some little distance, heard the fall, and though the roof was obviously in a dangerous condition, rushed to their assistance and managed to pull out Green, who was fastened by the legs. All their lamps had been extinguished and the men were in the dark. Benton placed Green, who was helpless from his injuries, in safety, and then ran for lights and assistance. On his return he found that a further heavy fall had taken place, and it was clear that there was no hope of getting Churms out alive. Benton undoubtedly saved Green’s life by his prompt and brave action and at the risk of his own life. These two medals were presented personally by His Majesty to the medallists oh the 22nd of July 1909.
