Arthur was born in Lymington, Hampshire on 17th June 1880, according to his attestation papers, though there are no records of his childhood. According to his papers, both of his parents were deceased at the time of his enlistment with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) on 24th August 1914, and his next of kin was his sister, Mrs S Skinnes, who was living in Toronto. Arthur enlisted stating he had previous military experience with the Matabeleland Relief Force and the Rhodesian Volunteer Forces. He was commissioned in the PPCLI as a Lieutenant and saw service on the Western Front. He was wounded on 8th May 1915, and this wound caused him to be invalided out of service on 3rd January 1916. He was then based in England and became Works Manager at the Chilwell Filling Factory, where the explosion happened on July 1st 1918, which led to the award of his Edward Medal. On 8th May 1920, at St Andrew’s, Holborn, London, he married Ethel Parkes. They had a son, Frank, born in 1921. Little else is known about Arthur, except that he retired to Hampshire, where he died in 1959, aged 79.

His Majesty the KING lias been pleased to award the Edward Medal to Lieutenant Arthur Hilary Bristowe, Works Manager, on account of the great courage and presence of mind which he displayed on the occasion of an explosion which occurred on the 1st July, 1918, at the National Filling Factory at Chilwell.
