Very little is known about the life of Colliery Under Manager John Cyril Davies. He was born in Doncaster on 6th March 1882, and later married Sarah and they had a daughter Lilian according to the 1939 England and Wales Register. The Register has John living at 115 Beech Road, Doncaster. John died in the 2nd Quarter of 1951 in the Don Valley area of Sheffield, aged 69. His medal, one of only 11 Edward Medal in Silver (Mines) awarded, was sold at Dix Noonan Webb in March 2017 for £3,400.
EM CITATION:
On the nth June, ‘1947, a huge fall of roof occurred at Bullcroft Main Colliery trapping two rippers. The fall occurred at 10.30 a.m. and oneof the trapped men was extricated at 2 p.m. and the other at 5.30 p.m. For almost all this time Davies was in charge of the rescue work, which was carried out by digging a narrow tunnel through the side of the roadway to the point where the trapped men were. Work in this small tunnel was hazardous and Davies remained in it for the whole of the period, being assisted by workmen in relays. Throughout the work there was the ever-present danger of further falls of roof which would have engulfed the rescuers. Both the trapped men were eventually rescued almost unhurt.
