John G Hinge EM
John George Hinge was born on 29th April 1879 in Feltham, Middlesex, the youngest of six children of Francis and Eliza (nee Batten). He was baptised in Feltham on 18th May 1879. His father passed away before he was 10, and he was brought up by his mother and elder siblings. Following a basic schooling, he became a bricklayer’s labourer, and was living and supporting his mother on the 1901 Census. On 29th March 1902 in Hounslow, he married Rosette Bennett, and he became a gas stocker. By the time of the 1911 Census, he was living at 86 Queen’s Road in Feltham, with his wife, and his then five children (they had eleven in the end). Following his recovery from his injuries, he became a prison officer. By the time of the 1939 England and Wales Register, he was living at 60 Gladstone Road, Feltham, and was now retired from the prison service. Little else is known except that he died at home on 6th March 1957, aged 77.
EM CITATION:
On the 1st October, 1914, Hinge was engaged with another man, at the Borstal Institution, Feltham, in removing an obstruction which had occurred in a gas main, when, an explosion occurred, hurling Hinge out of the door of the building where they were working. The other man was thrown against the opposite wall, and his escape jeopardised by the flaming gas between him and the door. Hinge pluckily went to his rescue, and succeeded in helping him out. He then, although badly burned and nearly collapsing, took steps to cut off the pressure of the gas, thereby preventing the possibility of further explosions, which might have caused very serious loss of life.
