George was born on 14th January 1870 in Hawarden, Flintshire, the 2nd of at least 6 children of Hugh and Anne Jones. George had a very basic education and by the age of 11 was already working as an errand boy to support his family. In 1892, George married Mary Ann, and they had seven children, the last born in 1908. George became a colliery fireman and it was in this capacity that he was awarded the Edward Medal for his actions at the Main Coal Colliery, Northop, near Flint. Little is known about George after the award of the Edward Medal, though in 1939, aged 69, he was living in Clayton Square, Hawarden, with his wife, and was still listed as working as collier. He died less than a year later in the winter of 1940, aged 70.
EM CITATION:
On the 5th August, 1910, a serious explosion, causing the loss of two lives, occurred at the Main Coal Colliery, Northop, near Flint, owing to the ignition of fire damp by a shot fired to bring down coal. Jones, the fireman in charge at the time of the explosion, was severely injured; but, although a fire was known to be burning in the mine, he returned twice to the workings, in search of one of the men under his charge who was believed to be missing. On the second occasion Jones was accompanied by Roberts, a timbcrman, who subsequently went again into the mine in order to extinguish the fire.
