Thomas Kew EM
Thomas, the eldest of five children of Thomas and Ellen Kew (nee Preston), was born in York on 21st November 1880. He was baptised on 8th December 1880. His siblings were called Charles, John Robert Gordon (died aged just 1), Ellen Ann and Richard Wallace Gordon (killed in action in 1917 during the Great War). Thomas Kew senior passed away when young Thomas was 16 in 1896 and his mother raised the family still in York. In 1905, Thomas, now aged 25, married Isabella Clark, and they had three children, Ellen Ann (born 1907), Thomas (born 1908) and Robert Gordon (born 1917). By the time of the 1911 Census, Thomas and his wife and two children had crossed the Pennines and had settled in Blackburn, Lancashire. Little is known about Thomas’ life following the Great War and the award of his Edward Medal. He died in Heysham, Lancashire, on 28th July 1958, aged 77.
