Little is known about the life of Michael Lyons, other than his actions which led to the award of the Edward Medal in Silver at the Mount Morgan Gold Mine in Queensland on 4th November 1908. It is known that he died on 1st October 1945 and is buried in North Rockhampton Cemetery, Rockhampton, Queensland.
EM CITATION:
At the Mount Morgan Mine, Queensland, on the 4th November, 1908, a subsidence occurred of a mass of ore weighing about 12,000 tons. Five men at work in the excavations were killed; two, Lyons and Banks, escaped, the latter being seriously injured in the head. Lyons called up the shaft for help. John Shields volunteered to descend, running very great risks while he was being lowered in consequence of falling debris. He reached the two men, and with the help of Lyons, who was unwilling to leave his wounded companion, Banks was securely fastened to the rope, and eventually all three were drawn up,
