EM CITATION:

On  the  3rd  November,  1916,  while  a  brick plug  was being  removed  from  an  outfall  sewer pipe at the Bombay Municipal  Sewage Works, a coolie  was overcome by  gas.    Two other coolie sat  once  went  down  the  man-hole,  shaking off their   fellow-workmen who  attempted   to   restrain  them,  and  refusing  to  wait  until  they could  be  roped.    They  fastened  their   fellow-workman ‘to  a  rope  and sent him up,  but  were then  overcome themselves.    Newarti then went down.    He  found  one  of  the  coolies  with   difficulty  and  sent  him  up,  and  was then   ordered to  the  surface.    He  at  once  went  down  again, but  failed  to  find  the  other,  whose  body was not  recovered  until   hours  later:     Both  the rescued  men  died  shortly  after  their  rescue. Although  the  atmosphere  was less foul when Newarti   first   descended,   and   was   probably almost  clear  at  his  second  descent,  he  and  the others  present were not  aware that this was so, and  he  undoubtedly  risked  his  life  in  endeavouring  to  save  the  lives  of  others.
