EM CITATION:

On the  23rd  September,  1924,  while a cupola for  melting  pig  iron  was .being  charged  at  the workshops   of  the   East   Indian   Railway   at Jamalpur  a  labourer  named  Ton  overbalanced and    fell   head    foremost   into   the    cupola, D”Santos,  who  was  working near  by,  immediately   seized   a  rope  and  jumped  ‘into  the cupola  in  order  to  effect   a  rescue.    He  ‘found Ton  unconscious  and  suffering  from  burns  but succeeded  in  tying  a .rope round  him  and then attempted  to  climb  back.   D’Santos was himself   affected   by  the  carbon  monoxide   fumes but   other   workers    coming    on   the    scene succeeded  in drawing  him  out.    He  displayed great  presence  of  mind  in  retaining  his  hold of   the   rope   and   this   allowed  of   Ton  being rescued.    Both  men  were  badly  gassed  and Ton   expired   shortly   after   his  removal  to  a hospital. D’Santos showed great  promptitude  and his conduct  was  undoubtedly  very  courageous.
