Llewellyn was born on 29th January 1876 in Leaswood, Flintshire, the youngest of three children of William and Jane Williams (nee Kay). His father was a coal miner and before Llewellyn had turned five, the family had moved to Bolton, Lancashire, where his mother was originally from. Llewellyn became a miner himself and became the chief financial support to his mother following his father’s death. Llewellyn later rose to the position of Under Manager at the Trencherbone Colliery. Following the award of the Edward Medal, he married Grace, and became a colliery manager. After his retirement, he and Grace moved to Worsley. He died in Salford in 1943, aged 67.
EM CITATION:
On 21st December, 1910, an explosion occurred at the No. 3 Bank Pit of the Hulton Colliery by which 344 persons lost their lives. The first-rescue party, all the members of which have already been awarded the Edward Medal in recognition of their bravery in attempting, at great risk, to rescue their comrades, were met at the Trencherbone inset by Mr. Llewellyn Williams, Under Manager of the Trencherbone Mine, who, though suffering severely from the shock of the explosion, did not return to the surface, but accompanied the others into the workings and took an active part in the rescue operations until the day was well advanced.
