Laurence Wiseman EM
Laurence was born on 24th August 1889 in Ardsley, Yorkshire, one of eleven children born to Alfred North and Martha Wiseman (nee Bennet). His father was a miner and worked in several different collieries in Yorkshire. Laurence followed in his footsteps and became a hewer. On 3rd June 1913 he married Nora Harding in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Laurence and Nora had seven children of their own. At the outbreak of World War I he enlisted with the York and Lancaster Regiment, but wounds saw him invalided home and he returned to the mines. He worked in the mines for the rest of his life, which was tragically cut short when he was killed in an accident at the Mitchell Main Colliery, near Barnsley on 28th June 1940 aged 50. He was buried in Ardsley Cemetery in Barnsley.
EM CITATION:
On the 20th April, 1918, a collier was buried by a fall of roof. Sellars was soon on the spot, and, after failing in an effort to get at the man by working under falling ground, he got on the top of the fall and worked along with Wiseman. After two-hours and a half of persistent effort they succeeded in rescuing the workman. Both Sellars and Wiseman ran the risk of being injured by further falls.
