William E Birkhimer MOH

Philippine Insurrection Medal of Honor Recipient. Served during the Philippine Insurrection in the United States Army as a Captain in the 3rd United States Artillery. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at San Miguel de Mayumo, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on May 13, 1899. His citation reads “With 12 men charged and routed 300 of the enemy”. His Medal was issued on June 15, 1902. He began his military career at age 16 during the Civil War, serving as a Private in the 4th Iowa Volunteer Infantry from 1864 to 1865. He received a commission of 2nd Lieutenant in the artillery branch in 1870, rising to Brigadier General before his retirement in 1906. He died in Washington DC on 10 June 1914, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
