He served during the Civil War as a Private in Company B, 18th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Petersburg, Virginia on April 2, 1865. His citation reads “Brought off from the picket line, under heavy fire, a comrade who had been shot through both legs”. Company B’s Private Carlton H. Camp assisted Private Boutwell in rescuing their comrade, and was awarded the CMOH as well.
