Joseph S Cecil MOH
Philippine Insurrection Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He was born at New River, Tennessee. He had first served his country in Company H of the 4th Tennessee Infantry, as a Private, then Corporal, finally reaching the rank of Sergeant. He was a part of the 4th Tenneessee from July 8, 1898, to May 6, 1899. He then was transferred as a Second Lieutenant to the 19th United States Infantry, that same month. He earned the CMOH while serving as a First Lieutenant in the 19th United States Infantry, during the Philippine Insurrection at Bud-Dajo, Jole, Philippines, on March 7, 1906. His citation reads: While at the head of the column about to assault the first cotta under a superior fire at short range personally carried to a sheltered position a wounded man and the body of one who was killed beside him. Although his citation states his name as Josephus S. Cecil, his stone bears the name Joseph Samuel Cecil.
