James E Cross MOH

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served as Corporal of Company K, 12th New York Infantry. During the actions at Blackburn Ford, Va., on July 18, 1861 in the First Bull Run Campaign, Corporal Cross’s regiment was driven back by Confederate forces. He refused to retreat with the rest of his unit, and returned fighting to the skirmish line despite obvious danger. He was awarded a CMOH for this act on 5 April 1898.

 

MOH CITATION:

With a companion, refused to retreat when the part of the regiment to which he was attached was driven back in disorder, but remained upon the skirmish line for some time thereafter, firing upon the enemy.
