James B Dozier MOH

Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. He received the award for his actions as a civilian scout with the US Army on October 5, 1870 at the Little Wichita River in Texas during a battle with the Kichai Indians, He later served in the US Army as a private with the 6th US Calvary. In 1917, after Congress revised the standards for the award, the US Army removed from the rolls 911 medals previously awarded to civilians or for actions that would not warrant a Medal of Honor under the new higher standards. His medal was among those revoked; however, in 1977, Congress began reviewing numerous cases and reinstated the medals for Dozier and four other civilian scouts on June 12, 1989. His Medal of Honor citation reads: “The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Civilian Scout James B. Dozier, a United States Civilian, for gallantry in action and on the march on 5 October 1870, while serving as an Indian Scout at Little Wichita River, Texas.”
