James Dunlavy MOH

American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He received the award on April 4, 1865 for his actions as a private with Company D, 3rd Iowa Cavalry Regiment, US Army, on October 25, 1864 at the Battle of Mine Creek (or Battle of the Osage), in Linn County, Kansas. He joined the US Army in November 1863 and the following October, when the Confederate forces were being routed at the Battle of Mine Creek, he singlehandedly captured Confederate Major General John Sappington Marmaduke. He was given a furlough as a reward for the remainder of his service commitment, and was discharged in August 1865. In 1870 he enrolled in Keokuk Medical College in Keokuk, Iowa and received his medical degree and practiced medicine at Stiles, Iowa for the next 32 years. He died at the age of 79. His Medal of Honor simply reads: “Gallantry in capturing Maj. Gen. John S. Marmaduke, C.S.A.”
