Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Corporal in the Union Army in the Chicago Mercantile Battery, Illinois Light Artillery. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on May 22, 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. His citation reads “Carried with others by hand a cannon up to and fired it through an embrasure of the enemy’s works.” He did not receive the Medal until 15 January 1895.
