Second Samoan Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. A native of England, he was issued the award on July 19, 1901 for his actions as a US Navy gunners mate first class assigned to the Navy cruiser USS Philadelphia (C-4) on April 1, 1899, as part of the landing party during the Second Battle of Vailele, Pacific Island of Samoa. He died at the age of 33, while serving aboard the Navy battleship USS Kearsarge (BB-5). Originally interred at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba, he was later reinterred at Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. His grave is unmarked. His Medal of Honor citation reads: “Gunner’s mate, first class, serving on board the U.S.S.Philadelphia, for distinguished conduct in the presence of the enemy at Samoa, April 1, 1899.”
