DATE OF MOH ACTION: 22/05/1863 Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served during the Civil War as First Lieutenant of Company B, 55th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 22, 1863. His citation reads “Gallantry in the charge of the “volunteer storming party.” His Medal was awarded to him on September 2, 1893. He was one of nine 55th Illinois Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being Corporal Robert M. Cox, Chaplain Milton L. Haney, Musician Orion P. Howe, Corporal James W. Larrabee, Private Robert A. Lower, Private Jerome Morford, Private Jacob Sandford and Corporal John Warden).
