William W Fraser MOH

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Burn Brac, Scotland, he immigrated to America and enlisted in the Union Army at Alton, Illinois. He served as a Private in Company I, 97th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Union Army. At the Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 22, 1863, Private Fraser was a volunteer with the storming party against the Confederate positions. Private Fraser was at the head of his attacking force where the enemy fire was hottest and the danger the greatest. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on October 24, 1895. He mustered out of the Army as a Corporal in July 1865 and relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he lived until his death at age 70.

For gallantry in the charge of the volunteer storming party on 22 May 1863.
